In 1851 the schooner America, from New York Yacht Club, beat the fifteen best British yachts in a race round the isle of Wight in the south of England. The winning club then sent out a challenge to yachtsmen from all over the world, offering the cup it had won to any yacht capable of defeating the America, and thus was born the most famous sailing regatta, The America's Cup.

Launched in 1764 as the collier Earl of Pembroke, she was purchased by the Navy in 1768 for a scientific mission to the Pacific Ocean, and to explore the seas for the surmised Terra Australis Incognita or "unknown southern land".

1/115 Cutty Sark 1869 - 80838

The Cutty Sark is a clipper ship. Built in 1869 for the Jock Willis shipping line, she was one of the last tea clippers to be built and one of the fastest, coming at the end of a long period of design development which halted as sailing ships gave way to steam propulsion.

The opening of the Suez Canal (also in 1869) meant that steam ships now had a much shorter route to China, so Cutty Sark spent only a few years on the tea trade before turning to the trade in wool from Australia, where she held the record time to Britain for ten years.
